Christians Citizenship & Economics

Preacher: John Repsold

Series: Christian Citizenship

Keywords: money, stewardship, economics, socialism, capitalism, biblical priorities

Summary:

Money and its use is one of the most talked about topics in the Bible. So it should not surprise us that the Bible has a lot to say about the kinds of economic systems that a Christian should be drawn to verses the kinds she/he should eschew. This third message in the series of Christian Citizenship examines 12 axioms or principles that the Bible gives us for judging and managing economic practices and policies of a nation.

Part 3 in Christian Citizenship Series

REVIEW:

  • Series on Christian Citizenship, Part 3 today.
  • 1st message: How our primary and dominant citizenship is in the Kingdom of God.  That citizenship trumps any earthly citizenship.  Our allegiance to Christ and His Kingdom is to determine how we live in any earthly country.
  • 2nd message: What does the Bible say good Christian citizenship should look like in a.) any nation of this world where Christians live, and b.) in the USA specifically?  Purpose of government:  to protect its citizens by punishing evil and rewarding good.
    • Living the preeminence of Christ above all else
    • Attitude of submission to all authority
    • Praying for leaders
    • Paying taxes
    • Practicing good stewardship of the best possible form of government we find ourselves living under. In our case in America, voting biblical values and priorities whenever possible in our constitutional republic.

Today’s message is going to answer the question, “Are there biblical principles and commands that should lead Christians citizens to prefer, practice and pursue certain economic systems over others?” Put more starkly, does the Bible give us any guidance as to whether we should advocate for socialism or capitalism, communism or free market economics?

Before you glaze over and think, “What on earth does this have to do with me today?”, let me show you.

Q: How many ‘economic’ decisions have you made already just today?

Answer: dozens to hundreds! And you may not have even touched money today, pulled out your wallet, credit card or check book.  How’s that?

“The economy is not just money. It’s the complex system of choices we make about all our resources (including money), all our time…” our energy, our conversations, friendships, family, brainpower, walking and driving…sleeping (in the service
