Proper Worship

Andrew Repsold

March, 17 2019

Wor·ship: The feeling and expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.  (often observed in the Bible by bowing down)

Examples from the Bible:      Exodus 4:31               12:27                32:8                  33:10              Revelation 19

  1. Why do we gather to worship together every week?

Because…

Humans (being made in the image of God) find wholeness in communion with God. Worship is one way we seek to commune with God.

“You have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

-St. Augustine, Confessions

Analogy: Marriage

Scriptural Support

  • Psalm 62:1
  • Psalm 63
  • Psalm 42
  • John 17:3
  • Revelation 19
  • Ephesians 5:22-23
  1. What is proper worship? (John 4)

True Worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth. (John 4:23)

Analogy: Any relationship.

example: “knowing” someone like Brad Pitt through tabloid magazines versus having a relationship with him.

The effect/evidence of proper worship will be union with God’s Holy Spirit. (should be a felt relationship).

Scriptural Support

  • Isaiah 29:13 (truth but not spirit)
  • Proverbs 19:2 (spirit but not truth)
  • Romans 10:2
  • John 8:32
  • Philippians 1:9
  • John 16:13
  1. How do I hope to foster proper worship at Mosaic?

Primarily through teaching and song.

Scriptural Support:

  • Colossians 3:16
  • Matthew 13:52

We sing, not primarily to express ourselves, but to orient our minds to the reality of who God is and to connect our spirits with his Holy Spirit.

Ways Christians have historically communed with God

-  Acapella music (Gregorian chant)

-  Instrumental music (J.S. Bach)

-  Choirs

  • Upbeat music (Pentecostal)
  • Reflective/meditative (Taizé community)
  • Congregational prayers
  • Times of listening and testing the spirit (Amish)
  • Taking Communion
  • Singing in Response to a leader
  • Dancing
  • Wailing (in mourning)
  • Yelling (in victory)
  • Confession

           Bonus:

What about when we don’t feel like worshipping God?

Scriptural Support:

  • Psalm 73:21-22
  • Mark 9:24

Why Every Week?

… Because our habits form our loves.

  • Example of going on dates with Katie regularly.

Formational Worship -  We do the things we love but we also grow to love the things that we regularly do.
