Wake Up, Get Ready, GO!  –  Sermon By Geoff Tesarik

Sunday, July 24, 2022

  1. INTRODUCTION           {SLIDE 1}
  2. SHARE ABOUT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY               {SLIDES 2 & 3}

Thank you for having me here. As Pastor ________ said, I’m Geoff Tesarik. This September will be my wife, Monique’s, and my 28th  wedding anniversary – God’s mercies and miracles are real! We’re very thankful for God’s grace and redemption in our lives! We have 4 incredible children, and just celebrated tons of graduations and a wedding! Our oldest son, Jaedon, got married to his wonderful bride, Ashley, in early June. In the last few years, my wife and I both became teachers and have recently moved to Nampa, Idaho.

Now we’re your missionaries in Idaho J                                                                       {SLIDE 4}

          We’ve loved being a part of Mosaic’s family for 3 1/2 years, and hope to visit and stay in touch often.

We’re joining with Paul in what he says in 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3. (2)We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers.  (3)We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.   You – brothers and sisters are dear to our hearts!

So, that’s kind of our social media snapshot of our family’s recent life highlights – I’m thankful for God’s many blessings. But no one’s life is perfect, right? God’s taught me humility and dependence on Him the hard way, more often than I care to admit.

  1. PERSONAL TESTIMONY {SLIDE 5}

God saved me from decades of addictions. In 3 months I’ll have 5 years of sobriety.

          Back in junior high and high school I liked drinking alcohol, watched lustful movies, looked at pornographic magazines (there wasn’t the internet yet), and smoked pot, and still managed to faithfully go to church almost every Sunday with my family. No surprise - I took all those harmful habits into college and my adult life. I met my wife while in Pharmacy School at the University of Washington. Four years into our marriage I almost died from an accidental drug overdose – God spared me.     {pause, connect}     I gave my life to Jesus the very next day. I woke up to my desperate need for a Savior and received His forgiveness.

Psalm 51:1-2  Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithfulness; According to the greatness of Your compassion, wipe out my wrongdoings.  Wash me thoroughly from my guilt, And cleanse me from my sin.

          I wish I could say after that, “and they lived happily ever after.”        But that’s not how it went.

I would spend the next 25 years going back and forth to pornography, or drugs, or both, and then back to God. I wasn’t prepared to live life on God’s terms, fully submitted to Him. I didn’t want to deal with life’s trials and hardships – I wanted an easier, softer way. Ironically, I kept choosing the more difficult and painful way. I tried numbing myself and tried to checkout of life’s difficulties.                                                         {SLIDE 6}

          By God’s grace and His many miracles, we’re still married and I’m still alive today. My life is a true testimony of God’s love, power, and total forgiveness - that He would allow me to be a part of His Kingdom work – that’s who our loving Father is – our Redeeming Savior and Lord – He makes all things new!

Proverbs 3:5-7  Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him,  And He will make your paths straight.  Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

          Have you woken up? We all are spiritually dead until Christ wakes us up.

  1. COME TO JESUS, OVERVIEW OF MESSAGE, PRAY – AWAKE O SLEEPER…
  2. SPIRITUALLY DEAD – WAKE UP AND COME TO CHRIST

If you haven’t woken up to your need for Jesus and His forgiveness for your sins – now is the time.

  1. {Wake Up!}

It’s time to wake up! Accept God’s free gift of forgiveness and salvation. If you’ve ever wondered why life isn’t going the way you want – it’s because God has a better path for you, a higher purpose and calling than just serving yourself, or just trying have an easy life. I was stuck serving myself, wanting things easy, usually pleasing me first in my life. And I wondered why at times life was so unfulfilling?

          Turning your life over to Christ Jesus as Lord is where true life begins. And until you WAKE UP to Jesus being your everything – the rest of this talk about “GET READY AND GO!” won’t really apply yet.                                        {SLIDE 7}

Romans 13:11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

1 Thessalonians 5:5-6 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then, let’s not sleep as others do, but let’s be alert and sober.

               So let’s wake up, church!                                         {SLIDE 8}

The heart of my message is based in Ephesians 5:14

Ephesians 5:14 Therefore it says: "Awake you, the one sleeping, and rise up out from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you."

  1. {First, you need to come to Jesus}

It’s time to get right with God. It’s time to have a life filled with meaning and eternal purpose from the One who made us. God has a mission for you. And it starts with Jesus, His Son, coming to earth on a rescue mission. MISSIO DEI means: God, the Father and God, the Holy Spirit sent God the Son to earth to die for His people – to rescue them – us - from sin and to wake us up to new life. We were spiritually dead – separated from God because, but Jesus offers us new life.

          One of my life verses comes from the book of Titus.                                                      {SLIDE 9}

Titus 2:11-14. (11)For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. (12)It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, (13)while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, (14)who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

          Get right with the Lord – don’t wait. We have people available after the service to pray with you and love you with God’s everlasting love. There are caring people here who want to help, please reach out and connect with someone.

Moses tells us in                                                                                                         {SLIDE 10}

Deuteronomy 30:19-20. (19)This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live (20)and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life…

  1. {God has appointed work for us to do – today!}

Once we wake up and come to Jesus we have a mission and we have a purpose created by God – and it’s not to live for ourselves.                                                                                                        {SLIDE 11}

          God is a missional God and we are to be like our Father. We’re called to be missional people. God invites us into His mission – we get to be part of His eternal purpose, building His Kingdom here on earth.

Ephesians 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.                                                   {SLIDE 12}

  1. MESSAGE OVERVIEW

God’s been teaching me lately about the importance of WAKING UP, GETTING READY, AND GO! That’s why it’s so important to repent of our sins quickly, and not be stuck in sin or complacent in life. To keep our hearts and minds humble and dependent on the Lord. I was praying about what God would have me speak on, and God gave me the topic of COURAGE – wake up, get ready, GO! – engage in daily battles and live victoriously in Jesus!

{SLIDE 13}

          My talk was inspired in part by something my son experienced. He was on his Christian college campus, walking around, he was wearing one of his favorite sweatshirts that has the words “Prayer Warrior” written on the front. A fellow student came up to him to tell him she didn’t like the word “warrior” on his sweatshirt.

          I was surprised to hear about her troubled response, but it made me realize either many Christians are unaware of the spiritual battle we’re in, or they prefer to live in ignorance – “Ignorant Bliss”, some might say.

          My hope is today’s message wakes us up to the reality that our struggle is a spiritual one – and God is calling His warriors to be ready!                                                                                      {SLIDE 14}

1 Peter 5:8-9 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  So resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brothers and sisters who are in the world.

The Devil and his minions are benefitting the most from us humans wasting precious time consuming ourselves with redefining words and feeling triggered – taking offense – by something every time the wind changes direction. Whether we acknowledge it or not – there is a spiritual battle. There is good and there is evil, and they don’t happily coexist – contrary to what you may have read on bumper stickers. We must be aware of the spiritual battle being waged all around us, against us and against our families – each and every day. But the spiritual battle isn’t something we can see with our eyes.                                                             {SLIDE 15}

2 Corinthians 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

The spiritual battle is happening right now.

Seen vs. Unseen;    Earthly vs. Spiritual;                     Temporary vs. Eternal

The unseen, spiritual, and eternal is actually more of a reality than what we can see and touch. The spiritual will last forever, while this present life and earth will pass away.

Let’s wake up and be ready! Let’s pray!...

  1. PRAYER

III. WAKE UP/GET READY

  1. HEROES – EXAMPLES OF WAKING UP, GETTING READY, AND GOING
  2. {ELISHA and His SERVANT.}

….Elisha is being attacked by the King of Syria.                                                                      {SLIDE 16

2 Kings 6:15-17. (15)When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. (16)“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”  (17)And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

The servant was able to see the many spiritual warriors which couldn’t be seen with human eyes.

  1. Jeff and Kim Ross – taking spiritual ground, taking territory, etc. They moved to the frontlines! After we wake up and come to Jesus – the next thing He has us do is to walk into the Armory of God.

Pilgrim’s Progress Allegory – Christian leaves the City of Destruction, he’s been carrying a burden when he comes to the Cross, he drops it at the Cross and he’s free of his sin and guilt. He then enters the Armory of God.

{SLIDE 17}

Ephesians 6:10-18. (10)Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.  (11)Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.  (12)For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  (13)Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.  (14)Stand firm therefore, having belted your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, (15)and having strapped on your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace; (16)in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  (17)And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (18)With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints…

  1. WE HAVE TO BE PREPARED
  2. {God’s Weapons}

God has warned us and has given us everything to be victorious. It’s just many of us Christians would rather believe that there is NOT a battle waging {happening}and we pretend to live at peace with this world.

{SLIDE 18}

2 Corinthians 10:3-5. (3)For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. (4)The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. (5)We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

**Our war is not against flesh and blood, but against…our sin and the devil and his wickedness.

**Living in harmony – maybe mention something about last week’s sermon…

People can be deceived and blinded, but they are not our problem. People are our passion. This is the mission of God!

{SLIDE 19}

  1. {Know Truth}

John 17:14-18. (14)I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. (15)My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. (16)They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. (17)Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. (18)As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

          God has us “in the world” so we can be a part of God’s mission to the world. But something happens to many of us. We get comfortable living in the world. And let me tell you – if you’re listening to world – you’re being lied to and your mind is being darkened to truth. Know who’s voice you’re hearing and make sure it’s our Holy God’s voice! There’s lots of counterfeits around us, masquerading as versions of truth – but bringing death and stealing our eternal joy and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. IDOLS AND DISTRACTIONS

As Americans we have willingly accepted comfort and conveniences to be our gods and idols.        {SLIDE 20}

*We love to be AMUSED. Whether it’s binge watching shows, playing on our phones and devices with our video games and social media. We are amusing ourselves to death.

          We can so easily checkout of life. I catch myself distracted on my phone when one of my kids or my wife is talking to me, like I’m braindead or something. That’s not who I want to be. That lifestyle doesn’t honor God or my family.

          The opposite of “AMUSE” is “MUSE”.  MUSE means to have a thoughtful manner; concentrate; to think about something carefully; to wonder or marvel. {?sentence example?}

          AMUSE means to stare stupidly.

Which action do you think the devil delights in us doing? Let’s stop pleasing the Devil and make sure our words and actions are pleasing God! How are we preparing the next generation to put God first above all things?

  1. WANTING SAFETY MORE THAN TRUSTING GOD {SLIDE 21}

Or maybe we have an obsession with safety? These last couple of years have shown us when we fear things other than God how quickly we get confused, scared, and indecent toward one another. Being fearful instead of faith-filled.

We have a painting of a ship in our living room, with full sails and the rugged sea waves crashing. It reminds me that a ship is safest in its harbor, but that’s not what the ship was built for.

          Our ultimate goal as Christians should not be primarily for our safety, but rather to live 100% in God’s will for our lives. To do our part to help build His heavenly Kingdom here on earth. God’s will be done, not ours!

          We awake to God, and then we get ready… - for something – What are you training for? We’re all training for something.

  1. WHAT ARE WE TRAINING FOR SPIRITUALLY? {SLIDE 22}

Walking around town, watching the news or movies, reading online pop culture sites…does anyone else agree, it feels like we’re living in Genesis 19, that our culture has somehow surpassed the sins of the people who lived in Sodom and Gomorrah.

Romans 1:28-32. (28)Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. (29)They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, (30)slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; (31)they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. (32)Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

The word “approve” can also be translated “to applaud”. I think most of us would be in agreement that our current culture we live in has taken “approving of those who practice sins” to a whole new level. Not only do they applaud sin but now we are expected to stand and applaud sins with them or they’ll call us “haters”, “violent”, “bigots”, and “phobics” of the newest, latest group that wants the entire world’s approval of their shameful, wicked acts. They tell us we better approve and applaud their indecencies – OR ELSE!

  1. “OR ELSE” WHAT?
  2. {The cost to stand up for truth.}

Some of us here today have lost jobs and careers because our spiritual compass told us to do something or NOT to do something. Some have been ostracized by loved ones, taken off social media or banned from group gatherings due to differing values, decisions, and beliefs. How will we be able to successfully stand for what is right and godly if we are not ready and getting prepared now? And this is just our local Spokane community. There are atrocities and persecutions going on around the entire world! Do you think that won’t come here to our own doorsteps? More persecution is coming and we need to be ready to handle it with God’s power and perspective.

{SLIDE 23}

1 Peter 4:12. Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

  1. {Sitting around v. putting on God’s armor}

I believe this is happening, in part, because we as a worldwide church have been lazy, too preoccupied with ourselves, our conveniences, our safety. Sitting around being AMUSED instead of putting on God’s armor daily and taking the spiritual fight to the world. Now the world is bringing the spiritual fight to us.     {SLIDE 24}

{Review} 1 Peter 5:8-9. (8)Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (9)Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

  1. Lay down our lives for Jesus.

I was talking with a trusted friend and well-respected pastor and he said it’s not too far-fetched to think sometime in our lifetime, we may face persecution severe enough to be in a situation where our lives – or the lives of our loved ones – may be at risk, and we will be told to deny Jesus – OR ELSE! What will we do? How will we answer?

          Know that how you train is how you perform. We will answer according to how well we prepared. Are we ready for when trials and test come?

          I’m not trying to scare us or be an alarmist. God’s given me a challenge to wake up, be ready, and go where He leads me each and every day. And I’m sharing God’s charge with you, my brothers and sisters in Christ.

          You know, a Pessimist, doesn’t do anything because he says no matter what I do, it will end badly. And the Optimist won’t do anything either because he thinks everything will work out. I’m here today to remind us, God has called us to be His witnesses! Let’s go and shine Jesus’s truth and grace to those lost in the darkness. God is victorious!

{SLIDE 25}

  1. GO! {OBEDIENCE – One Day at a Time}
  2. GO! KEEP GATHERING TOGETHER, ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER

Matthew 16:18. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

God says He will build His church and the gates of Hell shall NOT prevail against it. He tells us this because the demons of Hell will try – and are trying – to prevail against God’s people.

All the more reason we need to continue to gather together. We are the church!

{SLIDE 26}

Hebrews 10:24-25. (24)And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. (25)Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

God calls us to build each other up, to exhort one another.

Maybe we could view coming to church as the half-time show of a football game. Where we take a break from the game and sit back to be amused.

          But in reality – Church is more like the huddle between plays. We run and execute the plan, then gather back up together to figure out what went right or wrong, make the necessary adjustments, encourage one another – and then we go run another play. Then we pick each other up and huddle back up to encourage and exhort each other again. We’re not in this alone. Don’t isolate – stay connected.

  1. STAY CONNECTED, IT’S LIFE OR DEATH

Coming to Mosaic again and again is great to get prayer, hugs, smiles, help and encouragement – we’re picking each other up and reminding each other “you can do it”, “God is with you and He is for you!”, keep fighting the good fight of faith!

          Being together is literal life or death – ask folks who go to our Saturday night Changing Lives Services, or ask some teachers or other professionals who work with young people.

Let me give you this encouragement from the book of Deuteronomy…                                     {SLIDE 27}

Deuteronomy 20:1, 3-4. (1)When you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you… (3)He shall say to them, ‘Hear, Israel, you are approaching the battle against your enemies today. Do not be fainthearted. Do not be afraid, or panic, or be terrified by them, (4)for the LORD your God is the One who is going with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’

  1. PLAN AND PUT INTO PRACTICE
  2. Anyone had a mid-life crisis? I’m so old I had mine 13 years ago. Instead of buying a Corvette – I got a pair of running shoes. I decided to start doing triathlons. I borrowed a friend’s bike for awhile, then I invested in my own, got a wetsuit, and all the “essentials” needed to train and perform my best on race day. After a few years and several races, I found this App called “Map My Run”. It was cool! It showed not only the distances, but elevation changes ??. And I could design routes and study them, but eventually – I had to get my shoes on and hit the road. Thinking about and studying the routes never actually got me in shape. I had to take action.

          Here’s where we’re at. {Here’s a little recap} we woke up, came alive in Christ. We realize we’re in a spiritual battle.                It’s time to get prepared and put our faith into action.

{SLIDE 28}

1 Corinthians 9:24-27. (24)Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. (25)Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. (26)So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. (27)But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

So, we have to be intentional. We don’t just become godly because we thought about wanting to be godly.

{SLIDE 29}

  1. Stop wasting time with godless things, instead invest your energy into Godly things that have eternal value.

1 Timothy 4:7-8 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.  For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

Paul’s telling us we can become more godly. It’s not salvation – we can’t earn that. The verses are telling us to prepare ourselves for trials and tests by becoming more godly. Through practice, dedication and consistency – we can train ourselves to be more like Christ Jesus. Daily prayer and bible reading, repenting of sins as needed, praising and thanking God for who He is and how He loves us, and trusting God in all things. Healthy, regular habits that draw us closer to our Lord.

  1. PRESS ON TOWARD THE GOAL

A few years into my triathlon career, I did the TigerTri up in Colville. It was an extra chaotic season of life – we had 3 young kids and were foster parents – life was busy! So my training was cut down, but I made up for it in studying the race. I knew where the hills were on the bike course, how many calories I needed to consume by each certain spot on the course, and when I should be drinking water. I planned but didn’t practice. I thought about it a lot – but didn’t do the physical training as much as needed. Come race day – I blew it – it wasn’t pretty.

          We can own a Bible, even 4 or 5 of them. But if we don’t get into the word regularly and meditate on it, memorize it, put the lessons into practice – we won’t get spiritually fit. We’ve got to put our spiritual shoes and use them, not just leave them in the closet.

**Talking about Paul’s life -                                                                                          {SLIDE 30}

Philippians 3:12-14. (12)Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (13)Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, (14)I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

  1. CONCLUSION
  2. GOD IS WITH US!

If Christ Jesus is our Lord and Savior - we’ve woken up from being spiritually dead, but have we woken up to our spiritual reality?

YES, we are in a spiritual battle! We’re called by God to suit up with the armor He gives us, and pick up and USE God’s heavenly weapons, that are not of this world, but good for tearing down strongholds and everything that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. Not just once in awhile, or when we feel like it, but everyday.

  2. Let’s pray…

Amen, Church! Let’s wake up, get ready, and go, as our good Lord leads!
